Chris Cunningham @ Opera House x Vivid Live Sydney

Just came back from the Chris Cunningham show at the Opera House as part of the Vivid Sydney Festival; in short it was a great way to spend a Sunday evening. He opened with his audiovisual mix of Gil Scott-Heron’s New York is Killing Me (as above) which, after seeing it in the Opera House, has become one of my favourites.

However I felt like there was something missing once the lights were back on; I asked myself ‘was that it?’ I was psyching myself to sit on the edges of my seat for at least another hour of it, but that was not fulfilled. A lot of purists would’ve been disappointed in this show since he was rehashing his old material, but in the spirit of Vivid and a mild desperation for more interesting names coming over to Australia, I think it would’ve been quite the feat just to get the fella to come over to the other side of the world. A dark theatre with great sound acoustics, large motherfucking speakers and lasers and video mashups of creepy shit. Sure, why the hell not?

I’ve been having a bit of a shitty-gigs streak in the past year, and this has somewhat made it better.

P.S. Did he create that video for that Boards of Canada track?
